Let's cut to the chase, I began my homeschooling journey when I was 11 years old. I just straight up dropped out of school and never went back after my summer vacations. It was a mutual decision between me and my parents. Why we opted for this is a story for another time, for now, just know that where I am today after leaving school, I wouldn't be here had I been going to school. I wouldn't have possessed the set of skills I possess now.
When we quit school there was indeed a backlash. People would say to our faces that our parents had stolen our childhood and I as an adult would now like to question them that 'do they really think that people who don't go to school, don't have a childhood?' Why then is the modern day thinker pointing out schools for stealing children's childhoods?' But as it should be with all aspects of life, people's reactions and words did not stop us from doing what we thought was right.
I did my O'levels privately and completed my A'levels too with good grades. Right after I applied for my bachelors in Nutrition at DOW University of Health Sciences and guess what? I got accepted!
My semester started a week ago, and since then I have been wanting to write this post for you all. Homeschooling is not disadvantageous for a person at any cost. It has allowed me to make a healthy relationship with the people back home, something most regular children cannot do. It has allowed me to learn so many skills people my age wouldn't know. I am a certified teacher, a blogger, a graphic designer, a social media manager and an employed individual. Most people my age barely know how to navigate themselves let alone the world. I do not intend to boast at all, even if this is coming off as that. This is just to clarify that all the doubts you all as homeschoolers have about where you stand or will stand in a couple of years are baseless!
Cherish the time you have with your family and friends. You will not be socially awkward when you step outside just because you did not go to school. Take this time to learn new things, enroll yourself in courses, attend workshops, make a blog or YouTube channel to showcase your skills and enjoy life to its fullest. There is no need to trouble yourself with intrusive thoughts of the future. The only way homeschooling will affect you is by making you a confident individual who is socially, emotionally and intellectually strong!
I simply like the way you've illustrated the experiences of homeschooling in this article.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a homeschooler, and my homeschooling also started just like yours.
Anyways, I can pretty much relate to your experience about the people's backlash, but on the other hand, it's also a fantastic experience, and in the end, homeschoolers turn out more open-minded, intelligent, and creative.
